Video may have killed the radio star, but its fugitive life is killing it over on social media.
Views of branded video content have increased 99 per cent on YouTube and 258 per cent on Facebook between 2016 and 2017. On Twitter, a video tweet is six times more likely to be retweeted than a photo tweet.
The benefits of using video in your marketing strategy are endless. So, can you afford not to incorporate it into your social media activity? Here are just a few hints and tips to get you started.
How are you watching this?
Let’s play a game – pick up your mobile.
Pretend you’re watching a video on YouTube; how are you holding your phone?
Now, pretend you’re scrolling through Facebook; how are you holding your phone?
Most (if not all), will find themselves holding their phone horizontally for YouTube and vertically for Facebook/social media. So why shoot it the other way round?
Social media platforms optimise video that has been recorded in the same way people hold their phones. So, before you even hit that record button, think about how people will watch it and spin your phone accordingly.
He’s behind you!
Don’t be so focused on what your subject is doing or saying that you don’t pay attention to what is happening around them.
Rowdy colleagues, a window looking onto a smoking area and even activity that should not be taking place during work time are all hazards that even the BBC has fallen foul of.
In the same vein, a boring background can have just as negative an impact. Don’t be that person, jazz it up a bit.
It’s not all talk
While interviews and pieces to camera do have their place, sometimes it takes a little time to warm up the team to get in front of the camera. So, what can you do in the meantime?
Your phone has so many features built in that you can make a start with! How about a timelapse of a day in your office? Or a slo-mo of something being made?
What about the other apps you use? Filters, superzoom, rewind and of course the ever-popular Boomerang features are already built in to the Instagram app.
With the help of a little video, what you consider to be mundane can be made interesting for your followers – don’t underestimate the power of movement to stop the scroll.
